international literature festival graal-müritz

The 1st international literature festival graal-müritz (ilgm) will take place from 29 August to 2 September 2025. The festival aims to present contemporary developments in prose, poetry, comics and graphic novels on an international scale and to discuss relevant political issues and scientific discourse in dialogue with authors. The aim is to raise the public profile of literature and reading.
The ilgm is particularly aimed at those interested in literature and culture in the region, the Baltic States, Scandinavia and Poland. It is particularly aimed at a young audience, pupils in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, who can actively participate.
Why Graal-Müritz? The place of retreat, of contemplation, where forest and sea meet, embedded in an often evoked natural landscape, has a great affinity with literature. Outstanding authors such as Franz Kafka, Robert Musil, Erich Kästner, Alfred Kerr, Kurt Tucholsky, Hans Fallada, Uwe Johnson and Walter Kempowski described it in their works. Kafka met his last great love, Dora Diamant, here in 1923. Before that, in their tens, Hans Fallada and Erich Kästner stayed with their parents in Graal and Müritz – at that time the towns were not yet connected. Walter Kempowski’s parents met there, and Uwe Johnson later described the town in his “Jahrestagen”.
