Claudia Dathe

Claudia Dathe was born near Leipzig in 1971. She studied translation studies at the University of Leipzig and spent a semester abroad in Pyatigorsk and Kraków. She subsequently completed a degree in business administration. From 1997 to 2004, she worked as a lecturer for the DAAD, first in Kazakhstan and then in Ukraine. She also worked until 2020 as a coordinator for projects on literary translation and European cultural exchange at the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Tübingen. Since 2021, Dathe has been coordinating the European Times research consortium project at the Faculty of Cultural Studies at the European University Viadrina. She translates literature from Russian and Ukrainian, including works by Andrei Kurkov, Serhiy Zhadan, Ostap Slyvynsky and Yevgenia Belorusez.

Dathe has received several awards, including the International Literature Prize in 2020, which she shared with Yevgenia Belorusez, the Drahomán Prize in 2021, and the Wilhelm Merton Prize for European Translation in 2022. She was also awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 2022.
