Liao Yiwu (China/Germany)
18 Prisoners
The Chinese writer and dissident Liao Yiwu – awarded the Geschwister-Scholl Prize and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade – gives a voice to the forgotten. During his own imprisonment from 1990 to 1994, he collected the stories of fellow inmates: political prisoners, criminals, religious persecuted, and outcasts – people from all social classes and different periods of Chinese history. As a chronicler of resistance, Liao documents 18 biographies that tell not only of suffering but also of the art of survival. With literary power and profound clarity, he creates an alternative historical picture of China. “Even in his tone, the power of this author becomes present, who shuns no pain and no terror, while still developing a sense of situational humor and a striking sensitivity,” — Mark Siemons, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
