Alhierd Bacharevič

Alhierd Bacharevič was born in 1975 in Minsk. He studied Belarusian literature and linguistics at the Pedagogical University in Minsk. He has published several novels and essay collections; his books have been translated into German, English, Russian, and other languages. In 2017, his 900-page work Europas Hunde (German edition 2024) was published. The novel, which Bacharevič translated into Russian himself, was shortlisted for Bolschaja Kniga, the most prestigious literary prize in the Russian-speaking world. The Belarus Free Theater staged an adaptation of the novel in Minsk, London, Paris, Adelaide, and Berlin. In 2025, the novel received the Leipzig Book Award for European Understanding. In Belarus, Alhierd Bacharevič has received several literary awards, including Book of the Year. In 2021, he was honored with the German Erwin Piscator Award. His works available in German include the novels Die Elster auf dem Galgen (2010) and Das letzte Buch von Herrn A. (2023), as well as the essay collections Paris, Berlin und das Dorf (2019) and Sie haben schon verloren (2021). Two of his novels (Europas Hunde and Das letzte Buch von Herrn A.) are banned in Belarus and classified as extremist. Starting in 2020, he lived in exile in Graz and later in Zug, Switzerland. He currently lives in Hamburg.
