Movie: Kafka’s Last Journey

The film “Kafka’s Last Journey,” produced by Hans-Gerd Koch together with Clemens Schmiedbauer, traces the final stages of Franz Kafka’s life—from Prague to the Wienerwald Sanatorium near Pernitz, then to the Laryngological University Clinic in Vienna, and finally to his last stop: Dr. Hermann’s Sanatorium in Kierling near Klosterneuburg. The film presents letters and documents that express the tuberculosis-stricken writer’s desperate search for relief. In interviews with Kafka scholars, the film seeks to approach the person Kafka was in his final phase of life. A medical historian explains the course of Kafka’s illness and the helplessness of doctors given the state of medicine at the time.
