Sergei Lebedev (Russia/ Germany)
No! Voices from Russia Against the War & The Protector
Two books, two perspectives on Russia’s war against Ukraine: No! Voices from Russia Against the War, edited by Sergei Lebedev, brings together 25 literary voices that, despite censorship, repression, and persecution, take a stand against violence, propaganda, and war. These texts reflect on guilt, responsibility, inner emigration, and life in exile – powerful, nuanced, and deeply personal. Afterwards, Lebedev will read from his newly published novel The Protector – a polyphonic European novel exploring the background to the war in Ukraine. July 2014: After the downing of flight MH-17, debris rains down over the Donbas. In this region marked by historical violence lives young Zhanna with her mother Marianna, the “Protector.” In poetic images, Lebedev tells of the dirt that remains – and the evil that never disappears.
