Vitalie Ciobanu

Vitalie Ciobanu (born 4 May 1964 in Florești) is a novelist, essayist, literary critic, journalist and political commentator. A graduate of Journalism at Moldova State University, he worked at Hyperion Publishing House and, in 1994, co-founded the cultural and intellectual dialogue journal Contrafort with Vasile Gârneț; he continues to lead the publication. He has contributed to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Deutsche Welle, writing about literature, identity, democracy and the European path of the Republic of Moldova. He is a member of the Writers’ Union of Moldova and the Writers’ Union of Romania and is a former President of PEN Moldova. In 2021 he received Moldova’s National Prize in Literature and the Arts.
