Maren Amini

Maren Amini was born in Hamburg in 1983 and is a comic artist, illustrator and cartoonist. After completing her degree in illustration at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, she worked as a freelancer for publications including the Washington Post, Der Spiegel and Die Zeit. In 2024, Amini’s first graphic novel, Ahmadjan und der Wiedehopf, was published; it is a biography of her father, who came to Hamburg from Afghanistan in 1972 to become an artist. Amini tells his story through the lens of the ancient Persian fable The Conference of the Birds by Fariduddin Attar, whilst also exploring her own identity.

Even before its publication, Ahmadjan und der Wiedehopf was awarded the Berthold Leibinger Comic Book Prize. It was also nominated for the DJLP Special Prize in the New Talents category.
