Karla Suárez

Karla Suárez was born in Havana in 1969. Her most recent novel, Objetos perdidos, was a finalist for the Premio Bienal Mario Vargas Llosa 2025. She has also published the series of novels “Havana Symphony”, comprising Um lugar chamado Angola, Havana, ano zero, A Viajante and Os Rostos do Silêncio, as well as the short story collections Carroza para actores and Espuma. She is also the author of Rome, par-delà les chemins and Cuba les chemins du hasard, travel books featuring photographs by the Italian photographer Francesco Gattoni, and Lézardes, a short story collection with photographs by the Luxembourgish photographer Yvon Lambert. Among her many distinctions, she has received the Prix Carbet de la Caraïbe and the Grand Prix du Livre Insulaire (France, 2012), the English PEN Translates Award, the Premio Lengua de Trapo (award for the best first novel, Spain, 1999), and the Premio Iberoamericano de Cuento Julio Cortázar. In 2007, she was selected for the Bogotá 39 project, which identified the 39 most important Latin American writers under the age of 39. She lives in Lisbon, where she coordinates the reading club of the Instituto Cervantes and teaches creative writing at the Escuela de Escritores in Madrid.
