Soviet Union, 1937. Thousands of letters written by prisoners who have fallen victim to false accusations are being burned in a prison cell. But against all expectations, one letter finds its way into the hands of the newly appointed district prosecutor, Alexander Korneyev, who is determined to meet the prisoner, a victim of NKVD agents.- Korneyev, a committed Bolshevik and a man of principle, suspects that the case has been fabricated. He wants justice and travels to Moscow to appeal directly to the Prosecutor General. Along the way, Korneyev encounters the ugly realities of Stalin’s totalitarian regime, without fully recognizing its true nature. – The film had its world premiere in the main competition of the 78th Cannes Film Festival on 14 May 2025, where it won the Francois Chalais Prize. It was theatrically released in Germany in February 2026.
