In the landscape of Romanian literature, Dublu autoportret is a book unique in its own way, a crusade of the innocents. Its pages can be read as a diary in which inner states alternate with detailed descriptions of the surrounding world; as a historical reconstruction of the Revolution, so necessary for a collective memory riddled with ambiguities; as a meditation on history; or, why not, as an action novel. Added to this is Varujan Vosganian’s inimitable way, familiar to us since The Book of Whispers, of deciphering symbols and bringing them into our midst. Although the events are narrated in the first person, it would be too limiting to describe the book as autobiographical. Everyone who survived will be able to recognize themselves, in one way or another, among its protagonists. In fact, the true protagonist is the Romanian people in search of their own destiny. And perhaps one day, any history of the Romanian Revolution that does not include pages from this book will be considered incomplete.
